Innovation is important for driving economic progress and competitiveness – both for developed and developing economies. With this in mind, measuring innovation and providing a rigorous statistical benchmark that attempts to capture national innovation ecosystems is at the heart of the World Innovation team. Our actions

Innovation is important for driving economic progress and competitiveness – both for developed and developing economies. Many governments are putting innovation at the center of their growth strategies. In that light, measuring innovation and providing a rigorous statistical benchmark that attempts to capture national innovation ecosystems is at the core of the WIPO Global Innovation Index team and mandate. The GII project was launched by Soumitra Dutta, Dean of Saïd Business School at Oxford University, in 2007 during his tenure at INSEAD. WIPO’s association with the GII started in 2011 and it began co-publishing the GII in 2012. In 2013, Cornell University joined as co-publisher, with Professor Dutta representing the GII at Cornell University and Bruno Lanvin at INSEAD. The GII continued to be co-published by Cornell University, INSEAD and WIPO until 2020. Since 2021, the GII has been published by WIPO in partnership with the Portulans Institute, various corporate and academic network partners and the GII Advisory Board.

What is the future of innovation-driven growth?

The 2022 edition of the GII tracks the most recent global innovation trends against the background of an ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, slowing productivity growth and other evolving challenges. This edition’s thematic focus on the future of innovation-driven growth provides a perspective on whether stagnation and low productivity growth are here to stay, or whether we are about to enter a new era, where new innovation spurts – the Digital Age and the Deep Science Innovation waves – bring about an economic uplift.

Ministers and Heads of States made special addresses at the launch event, while investors, business leaders, renowned scientists and academics, and representatives from prominent organizations participated in two panel discussions.
